We have to talk about the RAM situation

Like us, you’ve probably noticed the computer world went mad, as reports of RAM prices climbing almost vertically make the rounds. Unfortunately, it’s true. The price increases are measured in hundreds of percent, and it’s not over.
Obviously, since we’re in the business of building high-end workstation systems and servers, and our valued customers are in the business of buying them and putting them to work, this affects us all—so it’s time to talk about it.
Why Is RAM Getting So Expensive?
There’s no simple single answer when it comes to climbing RAM prices. The simple answer is that the demand for RAM has climbed so suddenly, that memory producers have no choice but to raise prices as supplies dwindle.
The not-so-simple answer is that consumer DDR5 prices are skyrocketing because memory manufacturers are shifting production from consumer RAM to the type of memory used in data centers, particularly for AI.
As such, the price increases are mainly affecting DDR5 meant for mainstream computers. While ECC DRAM prices are also going up significantly, the supply is less constrained and so the spikes haven’t been as severe.
Other Components Are Also Affected
It’s not just DDR5 RAM that’s going up in price. Flash storage is also affected, and so we expect to see SSD pricing going up as well, although not to the same extent.
We’re also seeing an increase in GPU prices, with AMD already announcing an upcoming 10% increase, and we can’t imagine NVIDIA is far behind. There are already rumors that a GDDR shortage is making NVIDIA stop its practice of bundling memory into kits for board partners.
How Will This Affect You
There’s no getting around the fact that an increase in component prices will increase the final cost of a computer. Since we are a boutique builder of high-quality, hand-assembled high-performance computers, we can’t order thousands or millions of RAM modules at a locked-in price like OEMs and large data center builders can.
In fact, it’s these types of organizations driving up the spot pricing of DDR5 memory as they buy up entire production runs to put them in mass-market computers.
What Is Titan Computers USA Doing About It?
That doesn’t mean we don’t have any power to reduce the pain of current market conditions. Titan Computers will still fight to find the most cost-effective supplies of components to minimize the impact on our customers.
What We Recommend For You
If you need a new workstation or server, we strongly recommend you get in touch with one of our expert consultants to determine what path is the best for your needs. In some cases it may make more sense to switch to ECC DRAM even though you may not strictly need it.
In other cases, you may be better off buying a higher volume of RAM for a better per-GB price, or building a system that allows you to expand your RAM later without the need to replace what you’ve already paid for.
There are many strategies that can help you weather the storm in both the medium and long term, so don’t be afraid to ask us for help ensuring you get the computer you need at a price you can afford.
